The 2025 Annual report of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at UMCG, University of Gronigen, a publication covering a full year of scientific research, education, business development, and outreach across one of the Netherlands’ leading preclinical biomedical departments.
Every element of this publication was designed from the ground up: custom illustrations, typography, page architecture, and all visual details: built into a cohesive system that carries the weight of complex science without losing warmth or clarity. The design reflects the collaborative, forward-looking character of the department itself: a community of researchers working at the molecular and cellular frontier, with the shared goal of more healthy years for all.

Microscopy photography opens the section introducing the three core research areas of the department — a deliberate metaphor for the microscopic scale at which BMS conducts its most fundamental work, grounding the reader in the precision and intimacy of the science before the research itself unfolds.
Lab list page — Illustration and typography come together in a single composition to map the full breadth of research areas within the Department of Biomedical Sciences, giving the reader an immediate, at-a-glance sense of the department’s reach before diving into the detail.

Group leader spread — Each research group leader is given dedicated space to share their vision for the future of their work, the scope of their research, and a custom illustration made specifically for them — grounding individual ambition in a visual identity that is both personal and part of the larger whole.

Throughout the publication, every section is enriched by purpose-made illustrations and microscope photography produced by the labs themselves — because making the invisible visible is not just a design choice, it is the very principle that drives the science.
